Song of the Writer (A cautionary tale)

Song of the Writer

(A cautionary tale)

by Jim Banister

© 2011

An epic poem lived in his soul

And ached for his fingertips.

Sonnets soft and lovely

Pressed, urgent, on his lips

Stories wild and wonderful

About his psyche strode.

He knew there was within his heart

A moving, passion’d ode.

He’d write the penultimate tragedy

And smile as readers cried.

All the words he needed

He was sure he had inside.

And as he lay down that Christmas Eve

The next Great Novel roamed through his Head

Where it will stay forever.

On Christmas Morning, he was dead.
